Keeping Your Kitchen Grease-Free: Easy Cleaning Tips

Keeping Your Kitchen Grease-Free: Easy Cleaning Tips

Anyone who cooks regularly with mustard oil, ghee, or deep-fried snacks knows the struggle — grease doesn't stay politely inside the pan. It drifts onto the stovetop, settles on tile walls, clings to the exhaust fan, and eventually turns the whole kitchen slightly sticky if you don't stay ahead of it. The good news is that a genuinely grease-free kitchen doesn't require hours of scrubbing every day. It comes down to a few consistent habits and the right tools for the job.

Prevent Grease Before It Spreads

The easiest grease to clean is the grease that never lands anywhere in the first place. If your stove sits near an open area or a wall, a simple splash guard or backsplash panel behind the burners catches most of the splatter from frying and tempering (bhaja/phoron). It's much easier to wipe a smooth panel than to scrub textured tile grout later. Similarly, always run your exhaust fan or chimney while frying — even a basic exhaust fan pulls a surprising amount of airborne oil out of the kitchen before it settles on cabinets and walls.

Cover What You Can

A splatter screen placed over the pan while frying is one of the cheapest, most underused tools in a Bangladeshi kitchen. It lets steam escape but blocks most oil droplets, cutting stovetop cleanup time dramatically.

Daily Habits That Actually Make a Difference

Grease is far easier to remove while it's still warm and fresh than after it has cooled and hardened into a sticky film. Wiping down the stovetop and nearby counter with a damp cloth right after cooking, while everything is still slightly warm, takes two minutes and prevents a job that would otherwise take twenty minutes a week later.

  • Wipe the stovetop immediately after each cooking session, not at the end of the day.
  • Keep a dedicated grease-cutting cloth or sponge separate from your dishwashing sponge.
  • Empty and rinse the oil catch tray under the stove (if your model has one) weekly.
  • Don't let dirty pans sit — oil residue hardens the longer it's left.

Dealing With Built-Up Grease

For grease that's already hardened on tiles, range hoods, or cabinet fronts, plain water won't cut it — oil and water don't mix. A mix of warm water with a few drops of dish soap, or a dedicated degreasing spray, breaks down the oil so it can be wiped away rather than just smeared around. Baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with a little water) is a reliable, inexpensive option for stubborn spots on stovetops and range hood filters — let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing gently with a non-scratch pad.

The Exhaust Fan and Range Hood Deserve Regular Attention

This is the most neglected spot in most kitchens. Grease builds up on the fan blades and filter mesh silently over months, reducing how well it pulls smoke and odor out of the kitchen, and eventually becoming a fire hazard. Removable metal filters can usually be soaked in hot water with dish soap or degreaser for 15–20 minutes, then scrubbed with a brush — do this at least once a month if you cook daily with oil.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Tools

Not every surface needs the same tool. A soft microfiber cloth is gentler on painted cabinet fronts and won't scratch them, while a stiffer scrub brush or non-scratch scouring pad works better on tile grout and stovetop grates. If you're dealing with grease in tight corners — around knobs, hinges, or tile grout lines — an old toothbrush or a small detail brush reaches where a cloth can't. Keeping a small caddy of dedicated grease-cleaning supplies (cloth, brush, degreaser, gloves) near the kitchen means there's no excuse to put off a quick wipe-down.

A Simple Weekly Routine

Rather than one exhausting deep-clean every few months, spreading the work out keeps grease from ever building up seriously: wipe surfaces daily, clean the stovetop and backsplash every two to three days, and do a proper scrub of the exhaust fan, range hood filter, and cabinet fronts once a week or every other week depending on how much you cook. This rhythm keeps the kitchen looking and feeling clean without ever facing an overwhelming scrubbing session.
